Cholera Outbreak in Central African Republic

Posted: August 18, 2016

UNICEF is currently responding to the cholera outbreak in the Central African Republic (declared on August 10) affecting communities that use the Oubangui river as their primary source of water. Cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by ingestion of food or water that has been contaminated with the bacterium found in fecal matter, vibrio cholera. At least 16 people have died as a result of this outbreak.

UNICEF is providing water purification tablets as well as medicine and hygiene kits to the affected communities.  Each tablet purifies more than a gallon of deadly, contaminated water and makes it safe enough for a child to drink. As a reminder, all sales on the PAHW website support UNICEF’s provision of water purification tablets to communities like those in CAR in need of safe, clean drinking water.
