Let's Celebrate UN Day

Posted: October 21, 2011

Monday is United Nations (UN) Day - an international day of observance on the anniversary of the UN's founding on October 24, 1945. The UN General Assembly recommended that member states observe UN Day as a public holiday, yet that recommendation has not been implemented in many countries.  So let's observe UN Day in our own way!

UN Day is devoted to celebrating the goals and successes of the UN - a critical force in the battle against global poverty.  A key UN commitment towards reducing global poverty is the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) - a concrete set of time-bound targets agreed to by the leaders of more than 170 nations in 2000.  With a 2015 deadline, they range from halting the spread of HIV/AIDS to halving extreme poverty to providing universal primary education. While our world is still far from reaching the MDGs, the goals have galvanized unprecedented efforts across the globe to reduce poverty, and some progress has been made.

The launch of PAHW was inspired by a firm belief that we can achieve the MDGs by harnessing our collective capacity to make a difference.  All profits from sales on the PAHW website support activities aimed at reaching the MDGs.  Sales through December 31 will support initiatives aligned with MDG 2 - to achieve universal primary education by supporting the Shanti Bhavan Children's Project (SBCP) in India. In India, 12% of girls and 9% of boys are not enrolled in primary school, equating to millions of children out of school.  SBCP helps improve access to primary school education by running a boarding school in Tamil Nadu, India for underprivileged children.

What will you do to celebrate UN Day?

Join our movement to create a better world! Celebrate UN Day by uploading a photo before midnight on Monday that commemorates or speaks to the work of the UN. Please let us know where and when the photo was taken, and what the photo means to you.  Will will feature five of these photos on the homepage slideshow next week.

Or, purchase any item from the PAHW website, and $5 will help the world reach MDG 2 by supporting the Shanti Bhavan Children's project.  Every cent of support for initiatives to achieve the MDGs represents progress.
