NYC Photoville

Posted: September 25, 2016

If you live in the New York City area, don't miss the last day of Photoville! Located in Dumbo directly under the Brooklyn Bridge, Photoville is an annual photography festival with exhibits featuring the work of over 400 artists as well as workshops and talks.

The “Water Stories” exhibit documents the global water crisis and what is being done to address it. The photograph below is by Osukputu Ado, Benue Nigeria, 2015. Caption is as follows:

Ucha Edwin is a 68-year-old farmer and blacksmith who has lived in Osukputu his entire life. Ucha attributes the loss of his father, two brothers and four of his children to unsafe water and poor sanitation in the community. "I grew up in this community and, out of my siblings, I am the only one alive," he says. "There were a lot of deaths caused by the bad water. Pigs and people entered the water and there was cholera. I lost four children. I felt like I could have died with them because it was so painful."

"The coming of WaterAid and the borehole has helped my children's education and their lives. They no longer go to school late. There is no stomach ache and no death. Most of them are now in the city and are healthy enough to do extra work to earn more money."
