"Young Boy in Buduburam Refugee Camp" by Laura Miller |
This week's New Photo of the Week is "Children Peeking Through Stone," taken in Ghana by Laura Miller.
Looking through the eye-shaped hole in the stone are three beaming, seemingly carefree young children. Their wide smiles and intent eyes convey such enthusiasm for being photographed.
Laura captures this same youthful joy in two other images she took in Ghana, this time at the Buduburam refugee camp. This camp, opened by UNHCR in 1990, is home to more than 12,000 refugees from Liberia who fled during the First Liberian Civil War (1989–1996) and the Second Liberian Civil War (1999–2003), as well as refugees from Sierra Leone who also escaped from civil war (1991–2001). Despite the extraordinarily challenging circumstances, the same optimism is conveyed in the expressions of the children in Buduburam ("Young Boy in Buduburam Refugee Camp"
and "
Adolescent Boy in Buduburam Refugee Camp").
The photographs are a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
